KARACHI: Last Saturday saw the very best in the Christian journalism come together at St. Patrick’s Boys High School in Karachi to celebrate the Eleventh Annual Agahi [Urdu Weekly of the Archdiocese of Karachi] Awards giving ceremony 2016 organised by Catechetical Centre Karachi.

Over 900 attended the ceremony and enjoyed an evening of entertainment and celebration with performances from young people.

The evening began with a short history and report by Fr. Arthur Charles the founder and the editor-in-chief of the weekly. He informed that every week 10,000 copies are printed and they go all over the world. Moreover, though its web edition thousands of people in over 100 countries read it on-line.

With that being said the presentation of the 2016 Awards commenced. The guests were invited to unveil this year’s awards. People from different walks of life were nominated for awards in a number of different areas. Fr. Dr. Indrias Rehmat, Academic Dean of National Catholic Institute of Theology gave away the awards.

This year’s Award Giving Jury decided to award Dr. Alfred Charles as the Best Editorial and News Contributor – a position which he has maintained for years. Mr. Christopher Zahid received the award of Best Feature Writer. Mr. Adil Ayub bagged the award of Best Social Media Manager. Mr & Mrs Yousaf Ghouri and Mrs Josephine James and her group from St. Jude’s Parish received the award of Best Agahi Promoters. Like previous years Mr. Samuel D. John received the award of Best Collaborators on behalf of the Rotti Press.

Highlights of the evening included the pageant of last year’s issues of Agahi by the teachers of St. Peter and Paul School of St. Paul’s Parish, Karachi and cutting of anniversary cake.

Fr. Dr. Indrias Rehmat, in his speech said that the evening was a huge success and a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the outstanding achievements of different people associated with Agahi. It also gave the chance to enjoy a well deserved evening out and it is wonderful that so many of them also received awards.

Fr. Arthur Charles thanked all those who attended the event. The evening closed with the recognition of the selfless service of the Agahi Team.

Earlier, a gathering was held for the distributors of Agahi throughout Karachi. His Grace, Archbishop graced with occasion as Guest of Honour.

The evening started with a welcome from Fr. Arthur Charles. He said that it was an opportunity to acknowledge, praise and to thank the distributors.

A prayer service was led by Mr. Yousaf Ghouri. Guests then enjoyed reports from different members who spoke about a few of the exciting events that took place while distributing the weekly over the past year.

Speaking on the occasion His Grace, Archbishop Emeritus said that the Agahi Staff work really hard to produce the best news product in print and online, every week. They do it, because they love the Church and this community. But you work of distribution validated their work. Your task is phenomenal, he said.
