Faisalabad: On the recommendation of His Lordship Bishop Dr. Joseph Arshad, District and Session Judge Faisalabad, Mr. Abid Hussain Qureshi ordered the release of 69 prisoners on the directives of Federal Minister for Human Rights Senator Kamran Michael under the program of Federal Ministry of Human Rights to release the prisoners who are involve in petty crimes and still in jail because they are unable to pay their penalties and fines.
This act of mercy was done during a Jail visit in Faisalabad by Senator Kamran Michael along with His Excellency Bishop Dr. Joseph Arshad (Bishop of Faisalabad) on 15th November 2016,. Rev. Fr. Kamran Taj (Vicar General of Faisalabad Diocese), Rev. Fr. Nisar Barkat, Mr. Abid Hussain Qureshi (District and Session Judge, Faisalabad), Mr. Joel Amir Sohutra (Former MPA), Pastor Khalid Awan, Director General Human rights General Arshad and Regional Director Punjab human rights, Lubna Masood were also present at that moment.
Senator Kamran Michael while addressing to the media said that this year has been announced as “Year of Mercy” by His Holiness Pope Francis. Therefore this initiative is being taken to award the fundamental right of freedom to these prisoners and Government has started the process to release the prisoners all over the country, accused of minor cases adding that this process was being started from Central Jail Faisalabad by releasing 69 prisoners involved in petty crimes.
He further said a policy is also being designed to reduce the number of prisoners in jails to ensure their better accommodation. He added that special training courses have been started to make them responsible and productive citizens.
