After his ordination, he left for the Punjab Mission of Kafiristan and Kashmir, where he spent 25 years serving the Catholic community.

Chaplaincy and Temperance Work:

Fr. Joseph Bougle MHM work as a chaplain was not limited to spiritual guidance alone. He was also responsible for keeping soldiers away from excessive alcohol consumption, a task considered part of a chaplain’s duty by the army authorities. The Catholic Church provided Temperance Centres to combat this problem, and Fr. Joseph Bougle MHM was instrumental in establishing such centers in various stations, including Ayubia.

Founding of the Church:

On August 15, 1901, Fr. Joseph Bougle MHM laid the foundation stone of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Ayubia. The church was completed on August 15, 1911, and consecrated by Monsignor Fr. Dominic Wagenaar MHM, the Apostolic Prefect of the Apostolic Prefecture of Kafiristan and Kashmir.




Legacy:

Fr. Joseph Bougle MHM legacy extends beyond the church he founded. He was a dedicated priest who served the Catholic community with zeal and compassion. His work as a chaplain and temperance advocate had a profound impact on the lives of many soldiers and their families.
