Fr. Mushtaq Piara: A Faithful Servant Called Home to the Lord

Sialkot, August 16, 2025:
It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that the Archdiocese of Lahore announces the passing of Rev. Fr. Mushtaq Piara, Assistant Priest of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Sialkot. He tragically lost his life in a road accident near Sahowala Canal, Sialkot, on the afternoon of August 16, 2025.

Born on 1st July 1976 in District Narowal, Punjab, Fr. Mushtaq was ordained a priest on 29th April 2006. For nearly two decades, he faithfully served the People of God with zeal, simplicity, and devotion to the pastoral ministry. His priestly journey was marked by compassion, humility, and a deep commitment to the Gospel.
Just recently, Fr. Mushtaq had the privilege of attending the Jubilee of Priests in the Vatican, together with his brother priests of the Archdiocese of Lahore, where he prayed at the heart of the Universal Church. Little did anyone know that this pilgrimage of faith would be one of his final great moments of joy and communion as a priest.

At the time of the tragic incident, Fr. Mushtaq was traveling with Fr. Zafar Tanvir, Parish Priest of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Sialkot. They were on their way to visit Fr. Mehboob Evarist, OFM Cap, at Village Sahowala. Their vehicle was struck by a fast-moving train at a railway crossing near Sahowala Canal. Sadly, Fr. Mushtaq passed away on the spot, while Fr. Zafar sustained injuries. He is currently under medical care, and his condition is reported to be out of danger, though he requires continued treatment.
The news of this tragic loss has brought profound grief to the Catholic community of Pakistan, especially in the Archdiocese of Lahore. Parishioners of Sialkot, along with clergy and faithful across the country, mourn the passing of a dedicated shepherd who gave his life in service to the Lord and His Church.
As the community gathers to pray for the eternal repose of Fr. Mushtaq’s soul, we remember the words of Christ: “Well done, good and faithful servant … enter into the joy of your Master.” (Matthew 25:23).
May his soul rest in peace, and may the Lord comfort all who mourn his passing. Amen
