Pilgrims of Hope: Oblate Formation Gathering in Multan

Multan: From July 9-12, 2024, the Oblate Juniorate in Multan, Pakistan, was abuzz with excitement as students from various stages of formation gathered for a vibrant and hopeful session themed “Pilgrims of Hope in Communion in Initial Formation.” The event was a resounding success, marked by inspiring talks, meaningful connections, and a deepening of Oblate identity and charism.




Opening Mass and Welcome

The gathering began with an opening Mass led by Fr. Gulshan Barkat, Chairman of the Formation Committee, who highlighted the significance of Oblate vocation, formation, and mission. Fr. Gulshan warmly welcomed the students and formators, outlining the goals of the gathering: building relationships across all stages of formation, learning from each other’s experiences, and strengthening their Oblate vocation.

Deepening Oblate Identity and Charism

Fr. Adnan Barkat, Assistant at the Oblate Juniorate and Vocation Director, spoke about Oblate Identity, calling attendees to be missionaries, religious, community-minded, and apostolic men. Students shared their vocation stories in small groups, fostering a deeper connection among them. Fr. Gasper James, Assistant Formator at the Oblate Scholasticate, discussed the five pillars of Oblate Charism: Option for the Poor, The Cross, Apostolic Community, Missionary Spirit, and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Embracing Digital Evangelization and Intercultural Mission

On July 11, the focus shifted to the digital world with an online talk by Fr. Bonga Majola, Director of the OMI General Service of Oblate Communication in Rome. He addressed the role of social media in evangelization, its challenges, and offered effective guidelines for navigating this new digital mission territory. Fr. Henricus Asodo, General Councillor for Formation, delivered a recorded message on the need for intercultural formation and mission. Fr. Basharat Exupear, Delegation Superior, wrapped up the talks with his thoughts on “Initial Formation: Journey of Accompaniment.”

Celebratory Mass

The session concluded with a celebratory Mass by Bishop Yousaf Sohan of Lahore Diocese. On July 12, the students capped off the gathering with a joyous picnic, sharing the joy of community life and reinforcing their bonds and commitment to their shared mission.
