CM Sindh Renews Commitment to Restore St. Patrick’s Cathedral
Karachi (Fr. Mario Rodrigues): On 19th June 2024 – His Grace Archbishop Benny Travas, accompanied by Fr. Mario Rodrigues, was invited by Syed Murad Ali Shah, Chief Minister of Sindh, to an Eid Millan lunch at the Chief Minister’s House in Karachi. The Archbishop extended warm Eid-ul-Adha greetings to the CM and expressed his gratitude for the invitation.
During their meeting, Chief Minister Shah inquired about the well-being of the Catholic community within the Archdiocese. He assured Archbishop Travas of his unwavering support and cooperation in addressing any needs or concerns of the Catholic population.
One of the significant topics discussed was the long-awaited renovation of the stained glass of the historic St. Patrick’s Cathedral, which stands as a testament to Karachi’s rich cultural and religious heritage. The 143-year-old Cathedral, renowned for its majestic architecture and intricate stained-glass windows, has been a landmark of the city since its construction in 1845.

In 2019, Chief Minister Shah approved a substantial grant of Rs 250 million for the restoration of the Cathedral’s interior, including its glass, stone, and woodwork. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the project has faced delays, and the renovation work is yet to commence.
The Chief Minister reiterated his desire to see the stained-glass windows of the Cathedral, originally crafted by artisans from Mayor of Germany, restored to their former glory. These windows, donated by members of the congregation, hold significant historical and artistic value, adding to the Cathedral’s grandeur. The chancel, with its spacious and impressive design, coupled with the noble contours of the aspiring altar, is a visual masterpiece enhanced by the stained-glass artistry.

Archbishop Travas expressed his appreciation for the Chief Minister’s continued interest and support for the Cathedral’s restoration. The Archbishop emphasized the importance of preserving such historical monuments, which serve as cultural and spiritual havens for future generations.
